Matthew 4:18-19
18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
Matthew 4:18-19: Verse-by-Verse Analysis
Verse 18: Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee when he noticed two brothers, Simon (later known as Peter) and Andrew, who were fishermen. This setting by the sea is significant as it was a common place for Jesus to call his disciples, many of whom were fishermen.
Verse 19: Jesus called out to Simon and Andrew, inviting them to follow him. This call to discipleship was not just a call to physical proximity, but a call to a new way of life. Jesus used familiar language to these fishermen, promising to make them “fishers of men” instead of fish. This metaphorical language emphasizes the importance of spreading the message of the Gospel and bringing others into the Kingdom of God.
