Matthew 2:9-11
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.
11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Matthew 2:9-11: Verse-by-Verse Analysis
Verse 9: The wise men, having received instructions from King Herod, continued on their journey following the star that had led them to the location of the child. The star guided them until it stopped over the exact place where Jesus was.
Verse 10: Upon seeing the star stop and realizing they had reached their destination, the wise men were filled with great joy. This joy was a result of their anticipation and excitement at finally meeting the prophesied Messiah.
Verse 11: Arriving at the house where Jesus and his mother Mary were staying, the wise men immediately recognized the child as the one they had been seeking. In an act of reverence and worship, they bowed down before him. They then presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, symbolizing Jesus’ royalty, divinity, and sacrificial death.
In these verses, we see the fulfillment of prophecy as the wise men from the East journey to worship the newborn King. Their actions demonstrate their recognition of Jesus’ significance and their desire to honor him with their gifts and worship.
