Matthew 2:13-15
13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,
15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
Matthew 2:13-15: Verse-by-Verse Analysis
Verse 13: After the wise men had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. The angel instructed Joseph to take Jesus and Mary and flee to Egypt. This was to protect Jesus from King Herod, who sought to kill him. This shows the divine guidance and protection provided to Jesus and his family.
Verse 14: Joseph obeyed the angel’s command immediately. He took Jesus and Mary and left for Egypt under the cover of night. This demonstrates Joseph’s faith and trust in God’s plan, as well as his willingness to act swiftly to protect his family.
Verse 15: The family stayed in Egypt until the death of Herod. This fulfilled the prophecy from the Old Testament, specifically Hosea 11:1, which states, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” This highlights the fulfillment of God’s plan and the importance of Jesus’ role as the Son of God.
